Proof That Moriarty Was Real
6I need to talk about this moment.
Sherlock is terrified of Moriarty. Legitimately terrified of him. So terrified that Moriarty is literally the monster under Sherlock’s bed and the thing that keeps Sherlock up at night.
In The Great Game, Sherlock wanted to meet Moriarty. He reveled in the game, loved the chase, and saw Moriarty as the one man who could actually challenge him. He invited Moriarty to the pool just so he could finally meet his nemesis.
And then Moriarty got John. He took him, strapped Semtex to his chest, and threatened to burn Sherlock’s heart away. And now Sherlock fears Moriarty more than anything else. More than the Hound, more than his own brain lying to him, he is afraid of Moriarty.
It’s no longer a game, it’s real.
Now…what if Sherlock already knows, even here, that he’s going to have to fake his death in order to finish Moriarty for good? Fake his death and leave John to mourn him for an unspecified amount of time? He wasn’t afraid of Moriarty when he was piling up bodies or strapping bombs to children, that was all intriguing. But he’s scared of him now, as mirabilelectu points out, after Moriarty tells him that he knows he can threaten John to destroy Sherlock, because he can see through Sherlock’s facade of emotionlessness and knows that he cares very deeply for him.
There’s that scene at the end of Hounds where Sherlock watches John have his breakfast and he just looks so incredibly sad. You know the one: it’s a really beautiful shot. Why does Sherlock look so sad there? There’s no reason to be sad at the end of Hounds. John forgave him. The intimacy Sherlock ruptured by suggesting John isn’t his friend has been repaired. They’re back to their regular domesticity. But Sherlock looks at John so very sadly.
I’ll be honest, at first I thought that was just Cumberbatch being sad and it was sort of caught on camera. Because Cumberbatch was fairly sad when they were filming it, wasn’t he? I’ve been sort of tiptoeing around that shot for that reason, like it was a mistake. But of course none of these people make mistakes like that. Molly points out that Sherlock looks sad when he thinks John can’t see him: this is the first time we actually see that. Does he already know, even here, what’s going to happen? Is he already regretting it?
